The Artefact and Archive Recording Group (AARG) is a friendly group who meet weekly to process many of the archaeological finds resulting from current excavations in Surrey.

On-site we carry out the initial sorting and cleaning of artefacts as they leave the trenches with further processing carried out at our weekly evening meetings and occasional day sessions. Recent work has included processing artefacts from the prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post medieval periods.

Finds processing involves sorting, washing, marking and recording the artefacts; this is a very important part of the post-excavation process that has to be carried out before a site report can be written. It can also be a fun social activity, and is a way to learn more about archaeological artefacts.

We handle all types of finds including pottery, bone, glass, flint tools, shell, and building material. We also record "special finds" such as coins, jewellery or rare pottery, and investigate the need for specialist attention such as conservation.

Prior experience is not necessary, just a keen interest to learn about archaeological finds processing. On site you will learn how to handle different types of artefacts, eg. should they be washed or dry brushed or need more specialised treatment. Following excavation you will learn how to mark, record and package artefacts ready for storage. There are also opportunities for involvement in other projects and research.

We meet on a Wednesday night at "The Rovers Den", Ockham Parish Rooms, which is near Ripley and easily accessible from the A3.
