In 1997 Waverley Borough Council, the landowner, commissioned a preliminary survey into the historical and archaeological background of the land that forms the New or Little Park (now Farnham Park), just to the north east of the town of Farnham, in Surrey. The Park, which is a public open space, has been the site of a number of finds of important antiquities in recent years. As a result the Council felt that, for management purposes, it would be prudent to establish the range and degree of survival of historic landscape features and of archaeological sites within the boundaries.
A meeting of the Forum will take place in the Abraham Dixon Hall at the Leatherhead Institute. The morning programme includes a variety of speakers on topics related to research and fieldwork, which it is hoped members will find helpful in taking forward their projects. The afternoon is devoted to short presentations by members of the Forum on their particular research interests before a general discussion on what the Forum can offer in the future to assist members.
Details are on the attached programme.

This is the first time the important and multi faceted topic of Pilgrims and Pilgrimage has featured at a Medieval Studies Forum meeting. Two exciting external speakers will attend the meeting and be discussing pilgirmage from their perspectives: Martin Locker from UCL will be giving a presentation based on his research that set out to explore the link between the landscape and the pilgrim in Medieval Britain while John Jenkins from the University of York will discuss the experience of pilgrimage in relationship to English cathedrals that has arisen from the University's project.
